Cupcakes and Champagne at the Watergate

700 NEW HAMPSHIRE AVENUE NW Unit# PH 1509, WASHINGTON DC20037

Hi, I’m Sheryll from thePoeLog.com. Last night, I braved the DC heat (granted: there was a break in the humidity) to venture out with my friend and The Cribline proprietor extraordinaire Eric Wohlschlegel to go to a cupcakes and champagne reception at the historic Watergate.

I have to admit, I’ve lived in DC for almost 10 years and I’ve never been to the Watergate. I know, I know, sacrilege. But I must say, the Watergate may be ruined for me forever after last night. I mean, how often do you find yourself invited to a penthouse showing on a gorgeous late May night, AND there’s champagne and Georgetown cupcakes?

Our gracious champagne-pouring hosts were Kenneth Rub and F. Lorenz Hubig, the LUXURYDC team at Stages Premier, Realtors®. The showing had a nice buzzy feel as curious Watergate residents mingled with the penthouse owners, local architects, and other real estate bloggers. It was like a relaxed and friendly cocktail party, complete with stunning views of Georgetown and the Potomac from a 600-square-foot private deck.

One of the penthouse owners chats about the property with other Watergate residents, realtors and our own Eric.

The Watergate’s residential portion is actually a three-unit coop building complex near Foggy Bottom and right next door to the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Literally, one of the other guests stopped by to check out the two-story, 1,257 square foot penthouse on his way to a symphony performance at the Kennedy Center.  The new Whole Foods is a short walk away, as are all the amazing restaurants near Foggy Bottom.

Fritz from Stages Premier shows prospective buyers the property.

The place was gorgeous. Full of dark masculine woods but it didn’t at all feel dark thanks to the large windows throughout. The main floor had a marble floored entryway, an open floor living and dining room, a galley kitchen, and half bath. A fully updated spa-like bath with bidet, crisp white tile and espresso cabinets.

A spiral staircase takes you to a landing on the second floor with patio doors that open onto the deck. There is a wonderful view of the Key Bridge on the Potomac River and the spires of Healy Hall at Georgetown in the background. You can just imagine sitting on the sofa on a Sunday with the doors open, reading a book and having your coffee while you listen to the faraway traffic with the scent of the potted English lavender wafting in. Pretty idyllic. You know, if you’re into that kind of thing, which I clearly am.

The private patio, a perfect place to enjoy a glass of champagne.

The spacious master bedroom has the same wall-to-wall windows as the living area downstairs, and the most amazing closets. Seriously, there were at least four good sized closets, including a shoe closet with sliding drawers. Heaven.

Everyone agreed that the artwork should stay with the coop. Unfortunately, the owners plan to take it with them.

But you should not take my word for it: Watch the video here and then, go. Go see this place. It’s listed for $731,500. Cupcakes and views included.
